The National Trust for Historic Renovation bestows the
2009 National Preservation Honor Award in annual presentation ceremony.

Willoughby, OH– The National Trust for Historic Preservation presented its Preservation Honor Award to Marous Brothers Construction, along with its minority partner, Jenkins Construction, for the restoration of the Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, Mich. The project was one of 23 award winners honored by the National Trust during its 2009 National Preservation Conference in Nashville, TN.

“The Grande Dame of Washington Blvd. is as resplendent as she was on the day the Book brothers opened for business, said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “The anchor of a revitalizing neighborhood, this icon of luxury and opulence is now a symbol of the gritty determination of Detroiters who would not let the Book Cadillac Hotel die.

Along with Marous Brothers Construction, co-recipients honored today for restoration of the Book Cadillac Hotel were: The Ferchill Group, Westin Hotels and Resorts; Kaczmar Architects; Sandvick Architects; Forrest Perkins; Desai Nasr Consulting Engineers; and Denk Associates. The National Preservation Awards are bestowed on distinguished individuals, nonprofit organizations, public agencies and corporations whose skill and determination have given new meaning to their communities through preservation of America's architectural and cultural heritage. These efforts include citizen attempts to save and maintain important landmarks; companies and craftsmen whose work restores the richness of the past; the vision of public officials who support preservation projects and legislation in their communities; and educators and journalists who help Americans understand the value of preservation.

The Book Cadillac Hotel was once one of the grandest hotels in the country during its height of popularity in the 1920’s, ‘30’s and ‘40’s. Having fallen into disrepair and eventually shuttered for over two decades, the 32-story building was facing the wrecking ball until Marous Brothers Construction was able to offer a creative approach to value engineering and cost control to make the renovation a reality. The once heralded elaborate ballrooms were completely rebuilt using original drawings, historic photos and plaster casts from the few details that remained after years of decay. The renovated Westin Book Cadillac Hotel and Condominiums opened its doors in October of 2008, bringing jobs and hope that this remarkable project will be the catalyst for future development in the once vibrant city of Detroit, Michigan.
