Technology in Construction: Building Smarter

Learn How Robotics and VDC Are Transforming Interior Construction
Innovation continues to reshape the construction industry—and at Marous Brothers Construction, we’re intentionally investing in technologies that help our teams build smarter, safer, and more efficiently. Within our Carpentry & Interior Finishes Group, one of the most impactful advancements has been the integration of robotic, BIM‑driven layout technology using the Dusty Robotics Field Printer.
This cutting‑edge tool allows our teams to translate coordinated digital models directly into precise, full‑scale layouts in the field—bringing design intent to life with unprecedented accuracy.
Bridging the Gap Between the Model and the Field

Traditionally, wall and ceiling layout has been a manual, time‑intensive process that relies heavily on tape measures, chalk lines, and interpretation of drawings. By contrast, the Dusty Robotics Field Printer uses coordinated BIM and VDC models to print full‑detail wall and ceiling layouts directly onto the concrete floor, ensuring the physical build aligns with the virtual design.
With a single operator, the robot can print up to 10,000 linear feet or 3,500 layout points per day, dramatically compressing schedules while maintaining accuracy within 1/16 of an inch. The system also supports multiple colors and languages, improving clarity and coordination across trades in complex, fast‑paced environments.
The result is a layout process that is faster, clearer, and far less prone to interpretation errors—allowing our crews to focus on installation rather than rework.
Early Coordination That Drives Better Outcomes
The real power of automated layout is unlocked when it’s paired with early Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) coordination. By involving metal stud framing and interior systems early in the coordination process, potential conflicts between framing, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems can be resolved digitally—before construction begins.
Robotic layout enables our teams to:
- Verify control tolerances and identify clashes early, prior to installation
- Reduce rework and material waste caused by late‑stage conflicts
- Accelerate installation timelines by eliminating manual layout bottlenecks
- Improve collaboration by ensuring all trades are building from the same coordinated information
This proactive approach helps deliver cleaner installs, tighter schedules, and greater cost certainty for our clients.
Technology That Empowers Craftsmanship
At Marous Brothers Construction, we view technology as a tool that enhances craftsmanship—not replaces it. Automated layout doesn’t remove skilled decision‑making from the field; it equips our carpenters and finishers with clearer information, better alignment, and more confidence in execution.
By removing guesswork and minimizing downstream conflicts, our teams can focus on what they do best: delivering high‑quality interior environments with precision and care—especially on projects with intricate geometry, curved walls, and dense ceiling coordination.
Sharing Innovation Beyond the Jobsite: Ohio Tech Day
Our commitment to technology also extends beyond active projects. At the request of our project partners, members of our team participated in Ohio Tech Day at NASA Glenn Research Center, a statewide event focused on showcasing innovation and inspiring the next generation of technology leaders.
During the event, our team demonstrated the capabilities of the Dusty Robotics Field Printer by importing a BIM model and printing a complex graphic directly onto the floor—illustrating how digital design can seamlessly translate into real‑world construction. It was an opportunity not only to highlight advanced construction technology, but also to engage students and attendees in conversations about careers in the building industry.
We’re proud to support initiatives that promote innovation, education, and workforce development across Ohio.
Looking Ahead
As AI, robotics, and automation continue to evolve, Marous Brothers Construction remains focused on integrating tools that deliver measurable value for our clients and project partners. For our Carpentry & Interior Finishes Group, robotic layout represents a smarter, more coordinated approach to interior construction—one that improves accuracy, efficiency, and collaboration from day one.
This is just one example of how we’re building with innovation in mind—and setting the stage for what’s next.
